Shot Blasting & Heat Treatment
The quality of the electroless nickel
plating is dependant on thorough surface preparation. In addition
to our chemical cleaning and activation processes, NiTEC also
have the facility to shot blast components up to 20 tonnes in
weight. Aluminium Oxide 180-220 grit is used to ensure a high
standard of surface finish is achieved. The shot blast booth
has a capacity of 216m3.
NiTEC also offer a large heat treatment facility. The furnace
has a range of 0 - 700°C and is fitted with chart recording
equipment, which monitors and the temperature changes of both
the furnace and the work. This enables heat treatment profiles
to be established for many different requirements. Heat treatment
can be used for stress relieving and de-embrittlement as pre-
and post-plate treatments. Electroless nickel plating can also
be heat treated to alter the hardness of the deposit, to achieve
customer requirements for specific applications. More recently,
high temperature heat treatment, for sustained periods has been
used to diffuse the electroless nickel layer into the steel,
to give a slight degree of flexibility to the coating, while
not affecting the greatly increased corrosion protection afforded
by this type of deposit for marine environments in the offshore
oil industry.
The furnace envelope is 1.5 x 1.5 x 2m high and is lined with
316 stainless steel, to minimise particle settlement on the work.
Small components can be loaded onto shelves to maximise the heat
treatment capacity and minimise the cost of the treatment. The
monitoring equipment ensures that the work achieves its required
temperature for the required time, eliminating the problem of
heat sinks on larger components or mixed load types
NiTEC has two heat treatment furnaces:
- Furnace 1: 1.5 x 1.5 x 2m high
- Furnace 2: 1.7 x 1.7 x 2.2m high
Both are constructed from 316 stainless steel to minimise particles
settling on the work.
